Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki has terminated the appointment of the Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability,Mr. Reginald Okun and General Manager of the state waste management board, Mr Aiyamenkue Akonofua over protests by sweepers owed six months salaries.
In a statement by the Osarodion Ogie, the SSG, the governor asked the affected officials to hand over to the next superior officer of their respective offices.
Sweepers had been demonstrating on the streets of Benin, the state capital and near Government House in GRA, alleging that they had been going through stress because of mounting debts resulting from the non-payment of their six months salary. When the protest broke the manager of the waste management board, Mr said the sweepers were being owed three and not six months as held by the sweepers and that the non-payment was due to ongoing restructuring in the board.
Miffed by the poor response and the backlash on governance, Obaseki decided to part ways with the Commissioner and manager.
