Two police officers attached to the Majority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. Kingsley Ikoro, were killed in an ambush by gunmen along the Okigwe axis of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway in Imo State on Sunday.
The officers were reportedly left behind to secure a vehicle that developed a mechanical fault while the rest of the convoy proceeded. They were later attacked and fatally shot by unidentified assailants.
Confirming the incident, the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, ordered an immediate manhunt for the attackers.
Spokesperson for the command, Henry Okoye, disclosed that tactical teams have been deployed to the area and are currently combing surrounding bushes and communities in search of the suspects.
Okoye stated that the remains of the slain officers have been evacuated to the morgue. He described the men as courageous officers who died in active service.
The police have urged members of the public to come forward with any credible information that could assist in tracking down those responsible for the killings.
The incident is the latest in a string of deadly attacks targeting security operatives across the South-East region, raising fresh concerns over the safety of law enforcement personnel and the growing insecurity in the area.
