The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh weather alert, forecasting thunderstorms, moderate to heavy rainfall, and possible flash floods across several states from Monday, August 4 to Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
In a weather outlook released on Sunday, NiMet urged Nigerians to exercise caution during the forecast period, warning residents to stay away from tall trees and avoid driving under heavy rain to prevent injuries from falling branches or objects dislodged by strong winds.
The agency also advised communities prone to flooding to activate emergency response mechanisms and ensure vulnerable individuals are protected from low night-time temperatures.
North
According to NiMet, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected in parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano and Katsina States on Monday morning. These conditions are forecast to intensify by afternoon or evening, with a high likelihood of flooding in parts of Adamawa, Taraba and Bauchi.
Similar weather conditions are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday in the northern region, particularly in Taraba, Kaduna, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Jigawa and Adamawa states.
Central
The central states will experience light rain in the mornings, affecting areas such as the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kogi, Benue and Nasarawa. Afternoon and evening hours are expected to bring more widespread rainfall across Kwara, Plateau and other parts of the region throughout the forecast period.
South
Cloudy skies with intermittent light rains are predicted across the southern region, affecting Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, Abia, Anambra, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa.
NiMet warned of a high risk of flooding in parts of Oyo, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom during the three-day period.
Precautionary Measures
The agency urged residents to take preventive actions, including disconnecting electrical appliances during storms, securing loose outdoor items, and dressing warmly in response to lower night-time temperatures.
“People should stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid sheltering under trees, and refrain from driving through flooded roads,” NiMet said.
The agency also advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather updates for flight planning and safety.
