The World Health Organization,WHO, has warned that an unnamed pandemic worse than COVID-19 is stalking the world and preventive action must be taken now before it is to late.
Director-General of the organization Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, made the call on Monday during the 76th World Health Assembly in in Geneva, Switzerland.
According to him, “The threat of another variant emerging that causes new surges of disease and death remains. And the threat of another pathogen emerging with even deadlier potential remains.”
“And pandemics are far from the only threat we face. In a world of overlapping and converging crises, an effective architecture for health emergency preparedness and response must address emergencies of all kinds.”
Warning that the world should be ready for the deadlier than COVID-19 variant , he stated that if left unattended to, the pandemic could roll back the gains made on COVID-19.
The warning is coming weeks after the WHO boss declared an end to COVID-19 as a public health emergency of international concern. Officially COVID-19 killed 13 million persons world wide, with the United States accounting for 1.3 million of the death.
Ghebreyesus said, “this year’s High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Preparedness and Response is a valuable opportunity for leaders to chart a clear path forward towards that future”.
