Oyetola in the midst of supporters before the polls
The Osun State Election Tribunal has declared former Governor Gboyega Oyetola as the duly elected governor in last July 16, 2022 governorship poll in the southwest state.
Two judges to one in a majority decision by the state’s Election Petition Tribunal, chaired by Justice Tertse Kume, ruled that Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke scored 219,666 votes against 314,931lawful votes for Oyetola.
The Tribunal directed that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to withdraw the Certificate of Return from Adeleke and issue it to Oyetola.
The tribunal ruled against Adeleke for overvoting in some polling units across the state. The Tribunal however ruled that Adeleke was eligible and qualified to contest the July 16, 2022 election.
Adeleke, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was declared winner of the governorship election held last 16 July. He was sworn in as governor on 27 November.
Oyetola, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), petitioned the INEC together with Adeleke and PDP before the tribunal challenging over voting in 749 polling units and qualification of Adeleke.
The sitting was concluded 11 days ago after adoption of final written addresses of parties involved.
