The leadership of the National Assembly, Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki and Speaker Yakubu Dogara, have condemned the move by 8 out of the 30 lawmakers in Benue State to serve impeachment notice to governor Samuel Ortom.
They faulted as strange a situation where a minority would issue the impeachment notice and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the police and security operatives involved in the matter to immediately withdraw and stop the process to avoid plunging the state into avoidable crisis.
Also, the PDP has “condemned the use of the police and state security service to impeach governor Ortom” According to Kola Ologbondiyan, National Publicity of the party, ” the former Speaker who was impeached and restrained by the court from parading himself as Speaker is purported to be among those 8 who are threatening to impeach the governor. The move is deliberate to create crisis in the state so that a state of emergency can be declared to remove the governor. This is condemnable and must be stopped”.
“What we are witnessing in this state is not only strange but unheard of. A group of 8 out of 30 legislators with the support of the police and DSS would serve an impeachment notice on the government. This is condemnable,” said, Senator Barnabas Gemade
