Late Miss Omozuwa
The rape and murder of a100 level Microbiology student of the University of Benin in Southsouth Nigeria, has drawn the anger of the state government and the institution’s management.
The student, Vera Omozuwa, 22, had gone to read at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Edo State Province 10 at Ikpoba Hill, Benin-City. She was attacked and raped there by a yet to be identified assailant. She died three days later while on admission in a hospital.
Reacting in a statement on Sunday, signed by Dr Benedicta Ehanire, Public Relations Officer of the University, and made available to newsmen in Benin-City, the Edo State capital, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Lilian Salami, is quoted as condemning the actions, which she said should not be condoned by any society. She condoled with the bereaved family and warned students of the varsity and young persons to be careful of the company they keep and places they visit.
Meanwhile the state governor, Godwin Obaseki has ordered the Nigerian police to thoroughly investigate the circumstances leading to the death of Vera. He disclosed this step in a tweet on Sunday.
