A potentially devastating security breach was averted in Akwa Ibom State on Monday, as police operatives recovered high explosive devices near the Ikot Ekpene Correctional Facility, in what could be described as a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to combat criminality across the state.
The Police Command confirmed that two 90mm high explosive rounds and related detonation materials were discovered and safely neutralised following a rapid response triggered by intelligence from correctional authorities.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit was immediately deployed to the scene, where a coordinated sweep prevented what officials say could have resulted in significant loss of life and damage to critical infrastructure.
Police authorities disclosed that the operation also uncovered a burning fuse, tools, and metal components suspected to be part of an improvised explosive setup.
The devices were successfully rendered safe, and security has since been reinforced around the custodial centre with heightened surveillance and patrols.
Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, described the development as a serious threat to public safety, warning that those behind the attempted attack would be tracked down and brought to justice. He assured residents that the situation is under control and that no casualties were recorded.
According to him, the incident comes amid intensified police operations across the state, which have also led to the arrest of five suspects linked to armed robbery and drug-related activities in Uyo and Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Areas.
In one operation, police apprehended a suspected gang member, Ofonime Tom, in Uyo, recovering a locally made pistol believed to have been used in terrorising residents.
In a separate raid on a known criminal hideout in Ibesikpo Asutan, four additional suspects were arrested, with officers seizing substances suspected to be Indian hemp, cash, mobile phones, and other items linked to illicit activities.
Preliminary findings indicate the location served as a hub for drug distribution and other criminal operations.
Police say all suspects are currently in custody undergoing interrogation, while investigations are ongoing to dismantle wider criminal networks and apprehend fleeing accomplices.
Reaffirming the Command’s stance, CP Azare emphasised a zero-tolerance policy for crime, stating that Akwa Ibom remains “a no-go area for criminals.” He called on residents to continue providing credible information to support law enforcement efforts, assuring that all tips would be handled confidentially.
Police authorities say the latest operations underscore a broader, intelligence-driven strategy to restore public confidence and ensure the safety of lives and property across the state.
