Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has lifted the suspension on activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in the state following the election of a new executive to oversee the union’s affairs.
The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, disclosed that the decision was part of the state government’s efforts to restore peace and order within the transport sector.
The newly inaugurated executive, led by Comrade Saturday Oamen, was sworn in during a ceremony at the Government House in Benin City.
Administered by the National Secretary of the NURTW, Comrade Kayode Agbeyana, the officials took the Oath of Office to serve a four-year tenure.
Okpebholo, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Umar Musa Ikhilor, commended the union for its support during the September 21 governorship election and charged the new leadership to promote peace, progress, and fairness in the state’s transport sector.
“This is a government for the people. We recognize the NURTW as a critical arm of the Nigeria Labour Congress and a vital organization representing ordinary workers,” the governor said.
He added, “Edo State, under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, is set to witness unprecedented progress and development. We trust this new leadership will bring the desired change to the road transport sector, ensuring peace, orderliness, and prosperity while protecting the rights of the common man.”
The governor expressed confidence in the national leadership of the NURTW, led by AMusiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, describing him as a stabilizing force capable of fostering unity and development in the Edo State chapter.
He also urged the new state executive to uphold the values of inclusivity and fairness while ensuring that no member of the union feels marginalized.
“Our charge to this union is clear: there must be peace, orderliness, and prosperity. Let no man be oppressed under your leadership,” the governor emphasized.
In his remarks, Akinsanya advised the new state chairman, Comrade Saturday Oamen, to promote inclusivity and work towards maintaining peace across the union’s branches in all 18 local government areas of the state.
