Okada Ban in Lagos: Protesting Motorcyclists Engage Policemen in Gun Duel

Burn fire and abandoned commercial vehicles at a scene of the melee in Lagos

The weekend peaceful demonstration by operators of banned motorcycles and tricycles in Lagos on Monday snowballed into a full blown confrontation of the protesters with the Policemen deployed to enforce compliance.

Areas noticeably on the boil now are Apapa, Ijora, Surulere where the protesters have blocked the road with burn fires made from used tyres and reportedly engaging in exchange of gunfire with policemen

Curiously, the state government which announced the enforcement of the ban on the operations of Okada and Keke Marwa riders in 15 local government areas and local council development areas,   stated on the Saturday take-off date of the ban that there was 90 per cent compliance.

Shockingly, the protesters returned to the roads with arms and are engaging the police in a shoot-out while street urchins and hoodlums have joined in the fighting, forcing commuters and commercial drivers to run for their dear lives as the gun battle rages on.
