After securing a unanimous endorsement at the special convention of the Nigeria Democratic Party, NDP, and emerged as it presidential candidate, former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2027 general election, Peter Obi has pledged that Nigeria would generate more than 10,000 megawatts of electricity within four years if elected president.
Obi’s adoption was approved by delegates and party members following a motion moved by Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central Senatorial District, at the convention held on Thursday.
The motion, which sought the formal adoption of Obi as the party’s standard-bearer for the next presidential election, received overwhelming support from delegates and was seconded by former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege.
Following the endorsement, delegates and party members present at the convention ratified the decision through a voice vote, effectively handing Obi the NDC presidential ticket.
The exercise was conducted in the presence of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), underscoring the formal nature of the proceedings.
The development marks a major step in the NDC’s preparations for the 2027 presidential election as opposition parties intensify efforts to build strong political platforms capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In his acceptance speech, Obi thanked party leaders, delegates, and supporters for entrusting him with the party’s presidential mandate, promising to provide focused leadership and pursue policies aimed at transforming Nigeria’s economy.
The former Anambra State governor outlined an ambitious plan to address the country’s chronic electricity challenges.
According to Obi, improved electricity generation and distribution would catalyze industrial growth, job creation, and increased productivity across key sectors of the economy.
He stressed that access to reliable power remained fundamental to national development, noting that many businesses continue to struggle under the burden of inadequate electricity supply.
Obi also reiterated his commitment to good governance, prudent management of public resources, and the creation of an enabling environment for investment and economic expansion.
