The security situation in Nigeria nosedived in the month of October compared to the previous month, according to a study by Beacon Consulting Ltd in its October 2023 monthly report released on Wednesday, November 15,2023.
According to the study made available to THISAGE on Monday, the report is an analysis of security incidents that occurred in Nigeria in the period of October 01 – 31, 2023, including an assessment of national and international developments such as the coup d’etat that occurred in some African countries, the Russian-Ukraine war, and the Israeli-Hamas war which impacted security in Nigeria.
The report showed a significant increase in all metrics for measuring the volatility of security- incidents, fatalities, and abductions.
“In the General Situation Analysis, the report included an update on the Presidential Election Tribunal (Supreme Court Ruling), an update on the New Government: Stress Test on the Economy and its Impact on Security, and an update on the Detention of Former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele and EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, said Beacon Consulting Ltd, adding that, “The Security Spotlight covers the targeting of students of Tertiary Institutions for Abduction by Security Threat Actors, and the Governors’ effort to tackle Insecurity in their States. The Security Analysis of the Off-cycle Elections in Bayelsa, Imo and Kogi States, the Israeli – Hamas War and the Geopolitical Consequence, an update on the military coup in Niger: Regional and Geopolitical Implications, and IPOB Secessionist Agitations and Calls for Referendum were all featured in the security spotlight.”
According to the report, in the month of October 2023, Nigeria witnessed 935 security incidents which represents a 70.6% increase from the data in the September report; 1127 fatalities were recorded representing a 93.97% increase; 518 persons were abducted representing a 50.6% increase.
A deep dive into the report shows that the North East region recorded the highest number of total incidents, fatalities, and abductions; while the North West region reported the highest number of civilian deaths. The conflict between the two non-state actors, Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP and Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal Jihad (JAS) contributed to the increased number of fatalities recorded in the North East region.
