From Victor Osula, Abuja
Following Sunday’s announcement of a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket by the governing All Progressives Congress, APC, for the 2023 election, a member of the party, Barr. Daniel Bwala has resigned his position and membership of the party
Presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu had presented Sen. Kassim Shettima, former Governor of Borno State as the Vice Presidential candidate of the ruling party, shortly after Ibrahim Masari, VP ‘place holder’ signed his withdrawal.
Shettima, a Muslim by faith will be running alongside Bola Ahmed Tinubu the Presidential flagbearer who is also a Muslim.
Their ticket has immediately attracted attacks from a cross-section of Nigerians who contend that such ticket is insensitive to the religious composition of the country.
In a post shared on his Twitter account, Daniel Bwala announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect.
He wrote: “Tonight I officially resigned my membership of @OfficialAPCNg on principles and conviction that I hold so dear. At this time of our national existence, our efforts and energy should gravitate towards uniting our people.”
Explaining further, Bwala said by the choice APC was no longer a political party but a machine to grab power.
He said: “The choice came to me as a surprise as a member of the APC that has been loyal for seven years, working hard to advance the cause of the party. This same issue was faced with President Buhari in 2014 and against all odds he chose to balance the ticket. Former U.S.A President Eisen Hover said that any political party that does not advance the cause of right and morality is a conspiracy to capture power.
“At this point in our country when the religious and ethnic fault lines have increased, it is imperative that we advance the cause of unity and do the right thing to balance the ticket. The decision of the party is a flagrant abuse of democracy and equity.”
