The Lagos Command of the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed ongoing violent protest in the state over the economic downturn occasioned by the confusing currency redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and urged people to stay out of harm’s way.
Early morning reports confirmed by THISAGE show that Ojota and Mile 12 areas of the state are currently witnessing violent demonstrations by Lagosians who have been unable to access their accounts in banks and were suddenly caught with wads of old N500, and N1,000 notes which were rendered useless after President Muhammadu Buhari’s Thursday morning nationwide address during which he directed the CBN to recycle only N200 notes for use until April 10, 2023.
Caught in the unexpected turn of events, the protesters took to the streets to vent their frustration and hardship.
Confirming the violent protest in part of Lagos on Friday morning, the Public Relations Officer of the Police Command in Lagos, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, through his Twitter handle on Friday said,
“ It is true. Our men are there. Reinforcement units have been deployed. Stay safe out there as we closely monitor and manage the situation. Police teams deployed. Situation monitoring ongoing.”
