Nigeria’s House of Representatives has inaugurated a conference committee on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill to harmonise differences between the versions passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The move comes as part of ongoing efforts to advance electoral reforms that bolster transparency and public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
A statement by the Clerk of the House, Yahaya Danzaria, revealed the committee’s membership includes Adebayo Balogun (APC) as Chairman, with members Fred Agbedi (PDP), Sada Soli (APC), Ahmadu Jaha (APC), Iduma Igariwey (PDP), Saidu Abdullahi (APC), and Zainab Gimba (APC).
House Spokesperson and Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Akin Rotimi Jnr, reaffirmed the House’s commitment to strengthening electoral governance and ensuring that the amended law reflects the collective will of the legislature.
The conference committee has been tasked to conclude its assignment within one week, after which the harmonised bill will return to both chambers for final consideration.
The Senate on Wednesday rejected a proposal by the Green Chamber to make the electronic transmission of election results mandatory, instead retaining the discretion of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over how results are transmitted, as it passed the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Amendment Bill 2026
