Leaders and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, ran for their dear lives when gunshots rang out during campaign in Ewu, a town in Esan Central Local Government Area of Edo State on Wednesday, January 18.
The shooting which took place near the public square in the town where the campaign held was said to have caused a scare which forced to suspend the rally as the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Marcus Onobun, former Commissioner for Land and Survey, Anslem Ojezua and other PDP leaders ran for their dear lives.
Confirming the incident to THISAGE, Mr Ojezua, said they were at the middle of the rally when “all of a sudden we heard gunshots. Still, we got on with the rally until somebody came to inform us that it was unsafe to continue because somebody had died. We had to shut down the rally. When we got to Irrua, (a neighbouring town) we asked some of our members to formally lodge a complaint with the police.
He said none of the members of the party could confirm the information about the dead, “but after being told, it would have been insensitive on our part to continue with the rally. All of us who went for the rally got home safely and none of our member was involved. The police is investigating the incident.”
