Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State was at Zabarmari on Sunday morning led kinsmen and other residents in the burial of 43 farmers killed by Boko Haram terrorists on Saturday.
The 49 farmers were migratory farmers from Sokoto State to Borno for work on the rice farms located at Zabamari in Jere Local Government Area of the state.
“First of all, accept my deepest sympathy over this carnage, once again, that affects all of us and every human with conscience. I am told some persons are still missing. We have been discussing with the military since yesterday, Insha Allah the remaining people will be traced soon,” Zulum told his grieving audience. before leading them in the funeral rites before the dead were buried.
Speaking to journalists later, he said; “It is disheartening that more than 40 citizens were slaughtered while they were working in their farmlands.
“Our people are in very difficult situations, they are in two different extreme conditions, in one side they stay at home they may be killed by hunger and starvation, on the other, they go out to their farmlands and risk getting killed by the insurgents. This is very sad.
President Muhammadu Buhari, in his reaction, condemned the killing and said the government would revamp the security architecture to protect Nigerians
He said; “I condemn the killing of our hardworking farmers by terrorists in Borno State. The entire country is hurt by these senseless killings. My thoughts are with their families in this time of grief. May their souls Rest In Peace.”
