The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has resigned from his position, effective immediately.
The former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, confirmed the development in a post on X
“The National Chairman of our great party, the All Progressives Congress(APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has resigned from his position, effective immediately, as confirmed by multiple sources”, he wrote.
A source familiar with the development said Ganduje cited health reasons for his decision, stating that he needs to focus on his well-being. Ganduje’s resignation is with immediate effect.
However, the resignation is reportedly part of a strategic move by the ruling party to calm rising discontent among stakeholders from the North-Central zone, who have consistently demanded the return of the party’s top office to the region.
According to insider accounts, Ganduje will be succeeded in acting capacity by one of the party’s national vice chairmen, until a substantive chairman is elected at the APC national convention scheduled for December 2025.
Ganduje was elected as the APC National Chairman in August 2023, amidst internal party conflicts. Prior to his election, he served as the Governor of Kano State from 2015 to 2023.
