The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja, has refuted allegations of negligence and poor emergency response following the death of rising singerFrom Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, who succumbed to severe neurotoxic complications from a snake bite on Saturday, January 31, 2026.
Addressing reports circulating on social media, the management of FMC Abuja stated that assertions claiming anti-snake venom was unavailable and that the hospital failed to act promptly are false.
The hospital expressed deep condolences to the Nwagene family, describing the loss of the young artist, also known as Nanyah, as tragic and deeply painful.
According to a statement issued on Sunday and signed by the Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Bioku Muftau, the patient was attended to immediately upon arrival.
The medical team reportedly commenced emergency interventions without delay, including resuscitation efforts, the administration of intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and the use of polyvalent snake antivenom.
The statement explained that a rapid clinical assessment revealed the patient had already developed severe neurotoxic effects from the bite. While plans were being finalized to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit for advanced management, her condition deteriorated suddenly.
Despite sustained cardiopulmonary resuscitation and life-saving measures by a specialized team, the patient could not be revived.
“The claims of non-availability of anti-snake venom and inadequate response do not reflect the reality of what transpired,” the management stated.
The hospital emphasized that all standard medical protocols were strictly followed and maintained that the quality of care provided met professional and ethical standards.
FMC Abuja reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and excellence in patient care, noting that its staff remain dedicated to saving lives under challenging circumstances.
The management urged the public to rely on verified sources rather than unsubstantiated social media narratives and remains open to further inquiries regarding the incident.
