The Kwankwasiyya political movement has dismissed media reports suggesting its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is making moves to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the claims as entirely baseless.
The denial was contained in a statement signed by the movement’s spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, and issued to journalists in Kano on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
The movement expressed concern over the circulation of speculative reports and televised opinions alleging that Kwankwaso had engaged in negotiations or made specific demands to rejoin the ruling party.
“The Kwankwasiyya Movement has observed with deep concern the increasing circulation of speculative reports, commentaries, and televised opinions alleging that our Principal, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, engaged in negotiations or made demands to defect to the All Progressives Congress,” the statement read.
Mohammed clarified that Senator Kwankwaso has not entered into any discussions with the APC, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, or any proxies regarding a defection.
He criticized the lack of verifiable facts in recent publications, stating that journalism should be built on investigation rather than “elite gossip” or “speculative analysis disguised as insider knowledge.”
Setting the record ahead of the 2027 political realignments, the spokesperson noted that the last formal meeting between Kwankwaso and President Tinubu took place in January 2024.
He emphasised that no discussion regarding defection or political bargaining occurred during that meeting, and that claims of “high demands” by the Senator are fabrications.
“It is important to emphasize that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has long-standing personal and political relationships that cut across party lines and administrations. Such interactions are normal, healthy, and expected in a democratic polity,” Mohammed said.
The movement further alleged that the reports are part of a coordinated attempt by certain political elites to discredit Kwankwaso and weaken his political relevance.
The statement suggested that many individuals promoting these narratives are those who have recently defected to the APC themselves and are seeking to justify their decisions through “revisionist storytelling.”
Reaffirming the Senator’s principles, the spokesperson described Kwankwaso as a politician of integrity who does not negotiate his convictions in secret.
“His political strength has always derived from the people—particularly the downtrodden—not from elite consensus or media echo chambers,” he added.
The statement concluded by calling on Nigerians to disregard the misleading reports, stating that the Kwankwasiyya base remains focused and unswayed by “orchestrated narratives and half-baked conclusions.”
