The Federal Government has released N50 billion to academic and non-academic staff unions of federal universities for the payment of earned allowances.
The Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, in a statement signed on Wednesday by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry, said that the funds are designated for the settlement of outstanding earned allowances.
He described the development as another clear demonstration of President Bola Tinubu’s firm commitment to reshaping Nigeria’s education sector.
“This significant step underscores the administration’s determination to shift Nigeria from a resource-based economy to a knowledge-driven one, by making strategic investments in education, infrastructure, and human capital.
“This intervention goes beyond a mere financial transaction; it is a reaffirmation of the president’s belief in the potential of Nigerian youths and the critical role both academic and non-academic staff play in their development”, he said.
By prioritising the welfare of university staff, Alausa stated that the government is laying the groundwork for a future where every Nigerian child receives a world-class education that is competitive on a global scale.
The Minister also expressed the President’s deep appreciation to the staff unions for their ongoing trust in his leadership, noting that their cooperation has fostered an environment of peace and mutual respect across the nation’s federal institutions.
Alausa pointed out that the country is currently experiencing one of its longest uninterrupted academic sessions in recent years, a result of the shared commitment between the government and university communities.
“The progress we’ve made is a testament to the strong partnership between the administration and the academic community”, he said.
