COVID-19: Nigeria Records First Death

The former Managing Director of Pipeline and Product Marketing Company, PPMC, a subsidiary of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Suleiman Achimugu has become the first casualty of the deadly Coronavirus in Nigeria.

He died at 2 a:m on Monday, following complications that arose from medical conditions related diabetes and myeloma.

He got back from UK 2 weeks ago and was said to have started exhibiting symptoms on Tuesday. The family reported to the NCDC, which sent officers to the house and took his blood specimen. It turned out positive

According reports, the ex-PPMC boss returned from the United Kingdom about two week ago having undergone what the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control described as a “medical procedure”.

Though the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has confirmed the death as the first in Nigeria, the agency did not disclose the identity.

The NCDC via its Twitter handle, @NCDCgov, on Monday said, “The first #COVID19 death in Nigeria has been recorded. The case was a 67-year-old male who returned home following medical treatment in the United Kingdom.

“He had underlying medical conditions- multiple myeloma and diabetes and was undergoing chemotherapy.”

His family is said to be under quarantine
