The family of the Senate President, Chief Godswill Akpabio, has excommunicated Mrs. Patience Ibanga Akpabio, wife of Barrister Ibanga Akpabio, from the Greater Akpabio Family of Ukana Ikot Ntuen in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The family said the decision followed her persistent “disparaging comments and unwholesome remarks” against the Senate President and his wife, Dr. Ekaette Unoma Akpabio.
In a series of viral social media videos, Mrs. Patience Ibanga Akpabio had accused the Senate President of neglecting his extended family and alleged unfair treatment by his wife — claims that drew widespread condemnation from members of the Akpabio clan and the public.
According to family sources, her comments, described as “insulting and defamatory,” continued despite several warnings from her husband and family elders. The remarks were said to have embarrassed the royal lineage and violated the family’s values of respect and unity.
At a press briefing held on Monday at the family hall, Afe Akuku Udo Akpabio, in Ukana, the family formally announced her expulsion. The meeting was attended by elders, women, and youth leaders.
A statement jointly signed by the Family Head, Akuku Ekan Akpabio; Sir Emem Akpabio, and 21 other members said the decision followed her continued defiance of an earlier traditional injunction restraining her from making further public comments about the Senate President and his wife.
“Mrs. Patience Ibanga Akpabio has continued in her tirade, ignoring the injunction by the family. This has brought public ridicule and shame to the Akpabio family and created the impression of a family unable to manage its members,” the statement read.
The family added that despite assurances from her husband that she would desist, her actions persisted, leaving them no choice but to issue a public disclaimer and formal excommunication.
“The Greater Akpabio Family shall not condone any act or behaviour that brings the family to disrepute or public opprobrium as exemplified by her current conduct,” the statement added.
While reaffirming their pride in the Senate President’s leadership and achievements, the family described her repeated attacks as “unwarranted” and “repulsive to family values and human dignity.”
They also cautioned the public against any dealings with Mrs. Patience Ibanga Akpabio in the name of the family, saying she no longer represents its interests in any capacity.
However, the family left the door open for reconciliation, stating that she could be reinstated if she expresses genuine remorse and seeks forgiveness through traditional channels.
“If she has any grievances, apologies, or regrets, she should present them to the family hierarchy for a review of our position in line with our customs and traditions,” the statement added.
