Akpabio Defeats Yari to Emerge Senate President

After an intense public and private duel involving high stakeholders like President Ahmed Bola Tinubu and champions of ethnic and religious fault lines as well as promoters of independence of the National Assembly, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio was on Tuesday elected President of the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Akpabio, who represents Akwa Ibom North-West emerged winner after polling 63 votes to defeat his opponent, Abdulaziz Yari, former Zamfara State governor, who got 46 votes.

 Akpabio a former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and Senate Minority Leader on the platform of the People’s Democratic party, PDP, got the long awaited nod yesterday when outgoing President, Ahmad Lawan endorsed him alongside other fence seaters.
The result which was announced by the clerk of the National Assembly, Sani Tambuwal showed that 109 senators voted.

Akpabio, former Akwa Ibom state governor under PDP, was nominated by Ali Ndume (Borno south) and seconded by Adeola Olamilekan (Ogun west); while Yari was nominated by Elisha Abbo (Adamawa South) and seconded by Jimoh Ibrahim, (Ondo central)

By that victory, Sen. Jibrin of Kano Central Senatorial District, becomes Deputy Senate President in the soon-to-be inaugurated Senate.
