Ademola Lookman has been crowned African Footballer of the Year by the Confederation of African Football at the prestigious awards ceremony in Marrakesh, Morocco, on Monday.
The 27-year-old Nigerian forward received the accolade after a remarkable season with Italian club Atalanta and an impressive performance at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Lookman’s outstanding achievements in 2024 include a memorable hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin and a crucial role in Nigeria’s run to the Africa Cup of Nations final in the Ivory Coast.
His three goals during the tournament significantly contributed to his national team’s success and ultimately helped him clinch the top individual honour.
The London-born footballer, who has previously played in the English Premier League for Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City, has established himself as a formidable striker in Serie A.
During the last season, Lookman netted 17 goals for Atalanta and has already scored 11 goals in the current campaign since joining the club in 2022.
Competing against strong candidates including Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy, Ivory Coast’s Simon Adingra, and South Africa’s Ronwen Williams, Lookman emerged victorious.
His consistent performance and impact on both club and international stages were key factors in the CAF’s decision.
