In line with its operation zero-pot-hole programme in the major cities, the Abia state government has commenced repair work on some streets in Umuahia, the state capital.
Speaking to newsmen in the capital, the managing director of Pumeco Nigeria Ltd, one of the companies handling the repairs, Sir Paul Ezeanyagu, assured of quality and reliable job.
He said the repairs will be along some portion of Umuwaya, Enugu, Aba, and Uwalaka roads as well as the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) junction to Government House gate.
Ezeanyagu said on his own, he has decided to open up the drainage on both sides of the roads to minimize flooding on the roads to prolong their life span although it is not part of the job.
The contractor, who frown at dumping of refuse in the drainage, called for desalting of the gutter running from St Stephen Anglican Church through Aba Aba to reduce flooding in the town.
According to him, if all the drainage are opened up, protected and properly channeled to the gutter which was built in the 80s, there will be no flooding in the capital.
Assuring that the job will be completed as soon as possible with the rains abbeting, he maintained that the people will begin to enjoy smooth rides on the roads before the Christmas session.
Similarly, some commuters have expressed appreciation for the repairs at the FMC junction, Umuahia tower round about, and some spots along Umuwaya road.
Expressing confidence in the company to execute quality job, they called for their early completion to save the good portion from further damage.
