Mr James Lalu, Executive Chairman of Plateau State Disability Right Commission, has appealed to President Muhammad Buhari to sign into law the Disability Bill to address the plight of People Living with Disabilities,PLD, in Nigeria, who lack access to facilities.
He said that Nigerian PLD are among the 36 million of people living with disabilities across the world especially in sub Sahara Africa who vulnerable to object poverty and rejection by their governments.
Speaking during an exclusive interview on the International Day of People Living with Disabilities around the globe at Dan daura Estate, Jos, the state PLD boss appealed to Buhari to fulfil his electioneering campaign promised of signing into law the right of people living with disabilities bill so as to protect them against violence, poverty and all inclusive government of development.
Lalu stressed that for the past 17 years right from the administration of ex-President Obasanjo till date adequate concern is yet to shown to address the society’s discrimination against them the PLDs .
According to him, PLDs are so poor they cannot meet basic needs let alone aspire to contest elections, adding that the effort of the PLDs to get the bill drafted and got it passed at the National Assembly is enough for the President to show compassion and sign it into law.
While commending Governor Simon Lalong for passing disabilities commission bill into law and 20 other states, he urged “Buhari to live up to his campaign promise in Lafia, Nasarawa State to sign the bill so that our almost three years of waiting in vain
“If we are told our got missing at the presidency we shall all assemble our members to go in search of our bill and have it signed so as to bring relief to our members across the 36 states.”
