Ex- Delta State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan Is Dead

Former Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, is dead.

Uduaghan died on the morning of Monday, October 19, 2026, according to a statement issued on behalf of the Uduaghan family by Toju Uduaghan.

The former governor, who was born on October 22, 1954, was 71 and would have turned 72 three days after his death.

In the statement announcing his passing, the family said it was with “profound sorrow and heavy hearts” that it announced the death of the former governor, describing him as a beloved father, brother, uncle and patriarch.

Titled “Announcement of the Passing of His Excellency, The Dr Chief Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan CON”, the statement confirmed that the former governor departed the world on the morning of October 19, adding that his death represented “an immeasurable loss” to his immediate family, the people of Delta State and Nigeria.

“We will deeply miss him and forever cherish his memory and enduring legacy”, the statement read.

The family also appealed to God to grant his soul eternal rest and comfort those mourning his death.

“Rest well, our beloved Father, grandfather, Brother, and Uncle. Your memory will forever remain in our hearts. Asamaigor, may your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen”, the family said.

Uduaghan was a medical doctor before venturing fully into public administration and politics, rising through the ranks of the Delta State Government before eventually occupying the state’s highest political office.

He served as Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003, during the administration of former Governor James Ibori.

He was subsequently appointed Secretary to the State Government, a position he held from 2003 to 2007.

His years in the state cabinet established him as one of the prominent figures within the political establishment and paved the way for his emergence as governor.

Uduaghan became Governor of Delta State in 2007 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), succeeding Ibori. He secured a second term and remained in office until May 2015, completing eight years as governor.

His administration pursued a development agenda focused on infrastructure, human capital development and peace and security, while the “Delta Beyond Oil” initiative became one of the defining policy directions of his tenure.

The programme sought to diversify the state’s economy and reduce its dependence on crude oil revenue by promoting sectors such as agriculture, tourism, manufacturing and other non-oil activities.

His administration also embarked on infrastructure projects across the state, including road construction and rehabilitation, healthcare facilities and developments around the Asaba Airport.

Healthcare remained particularly important to Uduaghan, given his professional background as a physician and his earlier service as Commissioner for Health.

His administration introduced programmes aimed at improving access to healthcare, particularly for pregnant women and children, while also investing in health infrastructure across the state.

His government equally pursued youth empowerment and grassroots development programmes as part of efforts to expand economic opportunities and improve living standards.

Uduaghan became popularly associated with the sobriquet “Talk and Do Governor,” a description used by supporters to portray him as a leader who sought to translate policies and promises into tangible projects.

Beyond his policies and development programmes, Uduaghan was regarded by political associates as a bridge-builder who promoted peace and sought to maintain unity among Delta State’s diverse ethnic and political groups.

His political career extended beyond his tenure as governor. After leaving office in 2015, he remained active in political affairs and continued to command influence within the state’s political establishment.

His death marks the end of the political journey of a former governor who spent more than two decades in public service, rising from the state cabinet to Government House, Asaba.

The Uduaghan family said his memory would remain cherished and his legacy enduring.
