The political crisis in Zamfara State has taken another turn as seven members of the State House of Assembly who recently resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) have opened talks with opposition parties over their next political destination.
The lawmakers said they are currently considering the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has also expressed interest in engaging them.
One of the affected lawmakers, Ibrahim Tukur Bakura, said the group had already held discussions with the three parties but was yet to formally meet with the PDP.
“For now, we have not sat with the PDP, though we may do so later. However, we have already met and discussed the possibility of joining either the ADC, NDC, or PRP”, Bakura said.
He explained that the lawmakers were being cautious because their decision would have significant political implications and must reflect the interests of their constituents.
According to him, the lawmakers would study the political situation in Zamfara and consult their supporters before settling on a new party.
“In a situation like this, we must exercise caution to avoid making the wrong choice. We need to analyse the situation thoroughly and align with the political direction of the people of Zamfara State before taking a final stance. Everything we are doing is in the interest of our constituents. If necessary, we will consult them directly to decide which party to join, as we are here to serve them”, he added.
Bakura further disclosed that the lawmakers had set next week as the deadline for announcing their new political platform, although he maintained that they remained open to discussions with other parties.
“We have resigned from the ruling APC and are engaging with other political parties. By next week, we will announce our decision. Our doors remain open for consultations with any party interested in accommodating us. It won’t take longer than next week to decide our path”, he noted.
The development comes after the seven lawmakers announced their resignation from the APC last week, triggering fresh speculation about the direction of politics in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The lawmakers included: Bashir Aliyu Gummi, Nasiru Abdullahi, Bashir Masama, Faruku Dosara, Ibrahim Tukur Bakura, Shamsudeen Hassan and Bashiru Sarkin-Zango.
They had earlier been suspended by the Assembly over allegations bordering on misconduct, conspiracy, mischief and holding an illegal sitting.
