A helicopter has crashed into a swampy area in Igbokoda, the headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, with the occupants feared dead.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, sending residents of the coastal community into panic as emergency and security personnel moved to the crash site.

The aircraft was reportedly brought down in swampy terrain opposite the Naval Base in Igbokoda.

The chairman of Ilaje Local Government Area, Maurice Oripelaye, who confirmed the crash, said military equipment was found at the scene but disclosed that authorities could not ascertain the number of people aboard the aircraft.

“We have confirmed that a helicopter crashed in the area, but we cannot ascertain the number of people that were on board yet. Military gear was found at the scene, but the helicopter had burnt to rubble,” he said.

The Ondo Police Command also confirmed the incident. Its spokesman, Jimoh Abayomi, said further details would be provided.

Meanwhile, emergency responders and security agencies have reportedly intensified efforts at the crash site to determine the number of occupants and ascertain whether anyone survived.

Personnel of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base were also said to have joined the rescue operation.

As of press time, there was no official confirmation of fatalities, and no authority had released the identities of the occupants.

The cause of the crash also remained unknown.

The aircraft, its operator, flight path, and purpose of the journey are under investigation.

The recovery of military equipment from the scene could provide an important clue to the identity of the aircraft, but officials have yet to publicly make any statement about the helicopter.

For now, the major concern remains the fate of the occupants, whose number and identities were still unknown as rescue and recovery operations continued.

Further details are expected from the military, police, and other relevant authorities as the crash site is fully assessed.
