Nine Zamfara Lawmakers Defect from APC

Nine members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have resigned their membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the party and the state administration of failing to adequately address worsening insecurity, alleged injustice, and the welfare concerns of lawmakers.

The lawmakers announced their resignation on Sunday, October 4, in a development that has further exposed the deepening political tensions within the Zamfara APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Those who resigned are Aliyu Ango Kagara, representing Talata Mafara South; Ibrahim Tukur Bakura, representing Bakura; Faruk Musa Dosara, representing Maradun I; Bashir Abubakar Masama, representing Bukkuyum North; Muktaru Nasiru Kaura, representing Kaura North; Nasiru Abdullahi, representing Maru North; Bashar Bello, representing Bungudu West; and Bashar Aliyu, representing Gummi I.

In their resignation statements, the lawmakers said they could no longer remain in a political party, which, in their assessment, had failed to adequately respond to the security challenges confronting residents of the state.

They particularly expressed concern over insecurity in rural communities, alleging that their repeated concerns over the safety of their constituents had not received sufficient attention.

One of the lawmakers, Kagara, said the situation had deteriorated to the extent that the lawmakers could no longer justify remaining in the APC.

“What we are challenging Governor Lawal’s administration about is even worse now compared to previous times, so we have seen no reason to continue remaining in the APC,” he said.

He added that constituents in rural areas who elected them to represent their interests were not receiving adequate attention over their security concerns.

Kagara also alleged that the lawmakers had gone 32 months without receiving salaries, allowances and other entitlements due to them as members of the state legislature.

“This is our 32 months without salary, allowances and other entitlements as honourable members”, he said, adding that the people of Zamfara had the responsibility to decide whether they were satisfied with the situation.

The Zamfara State chapter of the APC, however, said it had yet to receive official copies of the lawmakers’ resignation letters.

The party’s Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Danmadamin Birnin Magaji, said the APC had only seen the documents circulating on social media and was awaiting formal communication through the lawmakers’ respective political wards and local government structures.

“We are still waiting for their correspondence from their respective political wards after reaching their local government executives, which would later be forwarded to us”, he noted.

He added that the party would communicate its position after receiving the letters officially, stressing that the APC was not previously aware of the grievances cited by the lawmakers.

The latest development also follows earlier disagreements between the lawmakers and the party leadership.

Reports indicate that the affected lawmakers had previously been suspended amid allegations that they attempted to impeach the Speaker of the State House of Assembly about a year ago.

The lawmakers have not formally disclosed their next political destination. However, there are claims of possible movement towards the ADC.
