Colombia secured top spot in Group K after battling to a tense 0-0 draw with Portugal at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, as both nations progressed to the FIFA World Cup Round of 32.
The contest produced no goals but delivered plenty of drama, with outstanding goalkeeping and a dramatic VAR decision dominating the closing moments.
Portugal goalkeeper, Diogo Costa, was the standout performer, producing six crucial saves to frustrate a Colombian side that created the better opportunities throughout the evening. At the opposite end, Camilo Vargas remained alert whenever called upon, making two important stops to preserve Colombia’s clean sheet.
The opening half was evenly balanced, with both teams probing for openings but struggling to produce clear-cut chances. Cristiano Ronaldo, restored to Portugal’s starting line-up, looked lively in the early exchanges and briefly thought he was through on goal before the offside flag cut short the move. The veteran forward was also left frustrated after appeals for a foul inside the attacking third were waved away.
Knowing a draw would be enough to secure first place in the group, Colombia maintained their composure after the break and gradually took control of proceedings. Los Cafeteros enjoyed 51 per cent possession and peppered the Portuguese goal with 24 attempts, forcing Costa into a string of excellent saves, while Portugal managed 13 shots with only two testing Vargas.
The game’s defining moment arrived deep into stoppage time when Davinson Sánchez headed home from a set-piece, sending Colombian supporters into celebration. Their joy was short-lived, however, as a VAR review ruled the defender marginally offside, cancelling what would have been a dramatic winner.
Despite the disappointment, the point proved enough for Colombia to finish top of Group K on seven points, while Portugal advanced as runners-up with five.
Elsewhere in the group, DR Congo defeated Uzbekistan 3-1 to secure a historic first qualification for the World Cup knockout stage.j
Colombia will now face Ghana in the Round of 32 on July 3, while Portugal take on Croatia a day earlier as both sides continue their quest for World Cup glory.
