The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has intensified preparations for the 2027 general election with the inauguration of a committee to review its constitution, in a move aimed at strengthening internal democracy, transparency, and equity within the party.
The ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, who inaugurated the Constitution Review Committee on Thursday in Abuja, said the exercise was designed to reinforce the party’s founding principles and position it as a credible alternative for national leadership.
Mark said the committee’s terms of reference include strengthening provisions that promote fairness, inclusiveness, accountability, and discipline in the party’s structures and processes.
“This exercise is not about changing principles; it is about strengthening them. It is about ensuring clarity, fairness, inclusiveness, and accountability in our structures and processes”, he said.
According to him, the review would empower party members, promote unity, and provide clear mechanisms for resolving disputes fairly.
“You must listen to the voices of party members at all levels, respect our founding values, and produce a constitution that strengthens internal democracy, enhances discipline, and guarantees transparency in party affairs”, Mark added.
The ADC, unveiled last July by key opposition figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has been positioned as a coalition platform ahead of the 2027 polls.
On Wednesday, the party also inaugurated a 21-member Membership, Revalidation, Mobilisation, and Registration (MRMR) Committee, stressing that its prospects in national politics depend on building a strong and credible membership base.
Responding on behalf of members of the Constitution Review Committee, its chairman, Etigwe Uwa, SAN, assured party stakeholders that the panel would deliver a document acceptable across the party.
“We would seek inputs from as many members as we can, and we would do our best to produce a near-ideal, autochthonous, and workable constitution that enjoys buy-in and acceptance across the party and across our country,” Uwa said.
He pledged the committee’s commitment to the task, adding, “We solicit your support and pledge not to fail the party.”
