The Toronto Police Service has confirmed the death of a 46-year-old Nigerian man following a fatal shooting at a bus terminal in Toronto, Canada.
Police responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal, located near Yorkdale Road and Allen Road.
This incident marks Toronto’s first homicide of 2026.
According to a police update issued on Wednesday, January 7, the victim—identified as Osemwengie Irorere—and the suspect both boarded a GO bus at the terminal.
It is alleged that the suspect shot Irorere while on the bus before fleeing the scene on foot. When officers arrived, they found Irorere suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite life-saving measures performed at the scene, he was pronounced deceased.
The suspect was located and arrested a short time later, and a firearm was recovered by investigators. The Toronto Police Service identified the suspect as 40-year-old Tyrel Gibson of Toronto.
Gibson has been charged with first-degree murder. Reports indicate that the suspect has a lengthy criminal record dating back nearly two decades, including prior firearms offenses and a lifetime weapon prohibition order.
Gibson was scheduled to appear at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Monday, January 5, 2026, at 9:30 a.m.
The Homicide and Missing Persons Unit is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing.
