” Hunters are not criminals,” Hunting is not a crime,” were some of the inscriptions on placards hoisted by protesters in Toronkawa village in Bunkure Local Government Area of Kano State, where the deceased 16 hunters, killed in Uromi, Edo State, hailed from.
Governor Monday Okpehbolo, on Monday, visited families of the 16 hunters killed by a vigilance group in Uromi.
Okpehbolo was accompanied by Governor Abba Yusuf on the visit to the LGA of the state.
Some leaders of the Hausa and Arewa communities resident in Edo State, were also part of the governor’s entourage.
On their way to the village, the two governors were received by hundreds of protesters, especially at Bunkure and Toronkawa towns, carrying placards among which also read: “Justice for our travelling hunters”,“We need speedy dispensation of justice” “All we want is justice” “Stop killing Northerners” “We are peace-loving people”, “Justice for innocent souls.”
Addressing the people of Toronkawa village, Okpebholo assured the victims’ families that compensation would be paid and that justice would be done on the matter.
His host, Governor Yusuf pledged cash assistance and food supplies to the affected families.
Earlier in the day, Okpehbolo paid a condolence visit to the Government and people of the state over the killings.
He was received at the Government House by Governor Yusuf, during which he expressed his sympathy over the killings and assured his Kano State counterpart that justice would be done on the matter.
