As the nationwide anti-hunger protests rage on, protesters have looted the Kano Office of the NCC and set it on fire.
The demonstrators who looted the yet-to-be-commissioned building, located on State Road in the state capital, also attempted to enter the Government House but were promptly dispersed by security operatives.
Meanwhile, some youth groups have trooped to the streets of the city, chasing away hoodlums, who were looting shops and other commercial places.
Wearing face caps with “peace” inscriptions, the volunteering youths said they came out to prevent hoodlums from vandalising and looting properties during the protests.
They told newsmen that they would do their best to stop the burning and looting of people’s properties during the uprising.
In Borno State,where the protest also turned violent, Governor, Prof. Babagana Umar Zulum, has imposed a 24-hour curfew in State.
Spokesperson of the State Police Command, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, said the decision was taken to prevent further unrest and maintain public order in the state.
The curfew follows violent protest that erupted in the state on Thursday, as well as the the detonation of an improvised explosive device (IED), at a local tea joint in Kawori, killing at least 16 people and several others critically injured on Wednesday.
The statement emphasised the state’s commitment to preserving law and order, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the need for immediate action.
“In line with our constitutional mandate towards the restoration of law and order, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umar Zulum, in consultation with heads of security in the state, finds it expedient to declare a 24-hour curfew in the state with immediate effect”, the statement read.
According to the authorities, the curfew aims to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of the residents.
Daso called on the residents of Borno State to remain calm and law-abiding during this period.
“Further developments will be communicated to you accordingly”, the statement added.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, has lamented the looting and destruction of the Digital Innovation Park, which he said wad designed to support Nigeria’s technical talent accelerator program (3MTT).
According to him on his X account on Thursday, “It is sad to learn that our Digital Innovation Park in Kano slated for launch next week to support our technical talent accelerator (3MTT) has been set ablaze and looted by protesters.’
The looting and burning occurred during the protest in Kano, targeted the about- to- be-commissioned Nigeria Communication Commission Industrial Park, was targeted by the protesters.
“Alongside #3MTT, this building is set to host our buildathon holiday maker programme for secondary school kids starting next week,” he said.
