In another legal huddle on his campaign for return to the White House, ex- President Donald Trump is faced with a setback as an Appeal Court ruled that he can be prosecuted for trying to overturn the 2020 US election.
A federal appeals court ruled yesterday, rejecting his claim that a president is immune from criminal charges.
The unanimous decision by a three-judge panel with the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit moves him closer to trial before November’s presidential election as he seeks a return to the White House.
It also marks a watershed moment in the federal prosecution of Trump for conspiring to reverse his loss in the last election.
If the trial sails through, the former President could face a jail term of over 100 years.
Earlier, Supreme Court of two states of Maine and Colorado have banned him from their upcoming ballot for ” engaging in insurrection or rebellion” on January 6, 2020, while in office.
The US Supreme Court has the final say on Trump’s eligibility and it is yet to hear the case.
