Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State on Monday dismissed with the wave of a hand an alleged impeachment threat against him as the state House of Assembly is currently engulfed in crisis, including arson. Many lawmakers fled when arsonist set the House of Assembly on fire.
According to Channels TV reports, the state lawmakers fled for safety as police operatives fired teargas outside the assembly complex in Port Harcourt.
The Peoples Democratic Party-controlled House of Assembly a few hours ago removed its Leader, Edison Ehie, said to be Mr Fubara’s loyalist.
The majority of the lawmakers were said to have endorsed an impeachment notice against the governor.
“Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment,” Channels TV quoted Governor Fubara as telling his supporters at the assembly complex.
He vowed to resist any unjustified impeachment attempt against him and dared his detractors to tell the world his offence.
There was a face-off with security operatives on his way to the House of Assembly.
Addressing his supporters, Fubara said: “I know how you people are feeling. Just take it easy. When we have the youth, we have power.”
The unfolding drama is said to have been fueled by power tussle between former Governor Nyesom Wike, now FCT Minister and Fubara.
