To create as sense of belonging in the country, the governing All Progressives Congress, APC, has been advised to pick a someone from the southern party of the country as its presidential candidate in 2023
A former Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau, former governor of Kano State made this known in a BBC Hausa Service interview in Kano during the week.
The serving Senator, representing Kano Central in the National Assembly said that political power shift is important for all Nigerians to have a sense of belonging.
According to him, “It is also the same with rotating the presidency between the North and South.
“If we ignore power shifts, we’re not being fair to ourselves and we are not fair to history. In my opinion, a power shift is necessary for all Nigerians to have a sense of belonging.”
Shekarau however noted that although rotational presidency is not written in the APC’s constitution, it is desirable for justice and fairness.
“For instance, the present six geopolitical zones are not reflected in Nigeria’s constitution, but it is a good arrangement. You cannot implement any policy in Nigeria without taking geopolitical zones into consideration,” Shekarau added.
Former National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie Oyegun had made a similar call on the party to recognise what he called a ‘gentleman understanding’ to zone the presidency in the party in subtle reference to President Muhammadu Buhari statement that the party would determine his successor during an interview with Arise TV on June 10.
