The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has flagged-off the distribution of relief materials to Isu communities in Arochukwu local government area in Abia state.
The communities were recently involved in boundary clashes which led to loss of lives, destruction of crops, and property worth millions of Naira with their neighbours in Cross River state
Speaking during the occasion, the member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Hon Uko Nkole expressed deep concern over the condition of the people.
The House subcommittee chairman on Lands, who attracted the materials, called for proper delineation of the boundaries between the communities and the neighbours to avoid future occurrence of such clashes.
Decrying the challenges incurred by the people which included displacement, Nkole, who is also a member of other committees, added that on a personal level he had been assisting the people.
He said, “Not minding the apparent danger involved and the warning against it, I was one of the first persons that visited the communities no sooner than the clashes were over with relief materials.
According to Nkole, who disclosed that since then he had been in regular contact with their leaders on the way forward, commenced the federal government agency for the intervention.
The second term lawmaker, therefore expressed the hope that the materials which include bags of rice, beans, salt, garri, cartons of noodles, and mattresses will go along way to address their challenges.
“As you go home with the items, I want to assure you of my commitment as your representative, to continue to solicit other interventions for you as we look forward to the end of the matter.”
Similarly, the secretary, Abia State Emergency Management Agency (ASEMA), Mr. Sunday Jackson commended Nkole for taking it upon himself to facilitate the intervention when it was most needed by the communities.
He noted that by its central location in the East of the country, the state is prone to many boundary clashes and urged the federal government to do the needful to ensure lasting solutions to them.
Speaking on behalf of the communities, Amarachi Kalu lauded Nkole for attracting the materials and also called on the relevant bodies to find an end to the reoccurring clashes between them and their neighbours.
