The shooting of another African-American man during a US Police arrest has prompted fresh condemnation of the use of deadly force by police.

Rayshard Brooks, 27, was shot dead as he fled officers in a restaurant car park in Atlanta at the weekend.

Video footages released by Georgia Police Department showed Brooks sleeping in his car in a driveway of Wendy’s restaurant, prompting the owners to call police.

Police came and found Brooks sleeping in his car. It took some time for police to wake him up before he drove a distance to park the car within the restaurant premises.

The officers administered a sobriety test and then a breathalyser test with Mr Brooks’ permission. Not done, the officers then tried to handcuff him – at which point their body cams fell off.

They wrestled Mr Brooks to the ground. He managed to get up, grabbed the Taser and broke free before running away. The police gave a chase.

As the officers chased him, Mr Brooks is seen turning around and pointing the Taser at them and then being shot dead. The officers took him to a hospital where he is pronounced dead.

Analysts have concluded that the police officer intended to kill Brooks, who was unarmed. He could have fired at his legs, they say.

The city’s police chief has quit and the officer involved has been fired.

Coming weeks after the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police, and subsequent nationwide protests, the protesters have renewed their protest, tagged, Black Life Matters, against racism and police brutality.

Mr Floyd, also an African American, died after a white officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes late last month.
