The appalling compliance with government directive banning social gathering shown by places of worship, clubs and other places with gathering of more than 50 persons in the country, the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mohammad Adamu had issued a directive to all Zonal Assistant Inspector-General of Police, AIG, Commissioners of Police across the country to enforce the ban and restrictions.
According to Force Public Relations Officer, CP, Frank Mba, the directive is to ensure government measures to contain the spread of Covid-19 is strictly adhered to by the people.
He said; “The IGP, while urging officers to observe personal safety measures further directs Zonal AIGs and Command CPs to ensure that cases of unnecessary arrest and detention of suspects are not condoned. He reiterates that detention of suspects must be reduced to the barest minimum and that only serious cases of terrorism, armed robbery, homicide and other non-bailable offences should warrant detention. The IGP further directs that adequate measures be emplaced to screen persons to be committed to police custody. The IGP enjoins citizens to avoid social visits to police stations and other police offices and minimize official visits except where absolutely necessary”
The statement also disclosed police compliance with directive on closure of schools and colleges by closing the Nigeria Police Academy, all police primary and secondary schools nationwide. It ordered CPs to publicize phone numbers of their Command Control Rooms, Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers and other Tactical Commanders to facilitate interaction between the people and the policeman and women
