A group of 70 representatives in the National Assembly are seeking through a bill to change the country’s presidential to parliamentary system.
According to one of its leader, Nicholas Osai, the intention of the group is hinged on three cardinal points: investor friendliness, elimination of corruption and reduction of cost of government.
He believes that a return to the parliamentary system practiced by the country for six years after its independence in 1960 until the system was truncated by a military coup on January 16, 1966 and the subsequent outbreak of the civil war, would completely minimize over centralization of government which he considers as the major source of the ills plaguing the country.
He said: “ Countries which practice the parliamentary system are investor friendly and decentralized in governance. It would solve our country’s problems if we return to that system of government”.
The bill has passed the first reading in the House.
