Akwa Ibom Lawmakers Pass Anti-open Grazing Bill

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed a bill prohibiting open grazing in the state.

Lawmakers passed the bill after a clause-by-clause consideration during a plenary on Wednesday.

The bill will be transmitted to Governor Udom Emmanuel for assent. When he signs it, Akwa Ibom will join 11 other states, including Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Enugu and Abia, implementing an earlier the southern governors agreement in July to ban open grazing in the 17 Southern States.

The bill which provides for the establishment of ranches and livestock administration, regulation and control   was sponsored by a member representing Oruk Anam state constituency Udo Kieran.
