The Senate of the Federal University Lokoja, has approved the application of the Department of Mass Communication to commence postgraduate programmes, marking a major expansion of the universityโ€™s academic offerings.

The approval was granted during the Senateโ€™s 101st statutory meeting held on 14th May, 2026, following a review of the departmentโ€™s proposal and accreditation report.

The programmes are expected to strengthen advanced training in journalism, media, communication, and public relations.

Speaking on the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Solomon Gbenga Ibileye, described the approval as a milestone for the university and a response to the growing demand for specialized communication professionals in Nigeria.

โ€œThis approval reflects the universityโ€™s commitment to expanding access to quality postgraduate education and aligning our programmes with national and global industry needs,โ€ Prof. Ibileye said. โ€œThe Department of Mass Communication has shown readiness in terms of faculty, infrastructure, and curriculum design,โ€ the Vice-Chancellor added.

The Provost of the School of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Olarotimi Mathew Ajayi, said the new PG programmes would include Postgraduate Diploma, Masterโ€™s, and Ph.D. options in key areas of communication studies.

He noted that the university had recruited additional staff, upgraded the mass communication studios, and improved research facilities in preparation for the rollout.
