Zamfara State lawmakers on Tuesday abolished the March 23, 2019 law that empowers former governor and his deputy, ex-Speaker and his deputy to receive jumbo monthly allowances, which is up to the tune of N10million and other allowances for the former governor, Abdul’aziz Yari, Abubakar.
Immediate past governor of the state, Yari Abubakar had written a letter to successor, Governor Bello Metawalle, reminding him that he and the former officials mention were entitled to receive monthly upkeep allowance as spelt out in the enabling law. According to the ex-governor, a sum of N10million was due to him every month apart from other entitlements and urged the new governor to respect the enabling law and pay. Written on October 17 but recently leaked to the public, the letter on a letterhead of the former governor, has since gone viral, sparking debates in the country.
Honourable Faruk Dosara who presented the bill before the House and was seconded by Tukur Jekada, argued that the total payments for the categories of the ex-official samounted to N700 million,which the state can afford without failing to meet its social and economic obligations to the people. Without much ado, the bill reportedly went through first and second reading expeditiously and then a third before it was passed and sent to the governor for his assent.
