The West African Examinations Council has released the results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination for private candidates (second series).
In a statement on Sunday, WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola F. Adesina, announced the release, noting that the examination was conducted using a hybrid model—computer-based testing alongside the traditional paper-and-pen method.
The examination, which took place between October 25 and December 20, 2024, had 65,023 candidates across 5,067 centres nationwide.
The coordination of examiners and marking of scripts occurred from January 15 to February 4, 2025, at designated venues in Lagos, Ibadan, Benin, Enugu, and Kaduna, with 3,327 examiners participating.
A total of 68,342 candidates registered for the examination, reflecting a 20% decline compared to 2023.
Of this number, 65,023 sat for the exam, comprising 31,504 males and 33,519 females.
The performance analysis showed that “43,923 candidates (67.55%) obtained credit and above in at least five subjects, irrespective of English Language and Mathematics.
“34,878 candidates (53.64%) secured credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Of those who met the English and Mathematics requirement, 16,886 (48.41%) were male, while 17,992 (51.58%) were female.”
WAEC noted a 9.35% improvement in performance compared to the 2022 and 2023 editions of the private candidates’ examination.
Among the candidates were 157 special needs students, including 25 visually impaired, 13 hearing-impaired, and 15 albinos. WAEC assured that provisions were made to accommodate their specific needs.
However, 2,577 candidates (3.96%) had their results withheld due to alleged examination malpractice. Affected candidates have been advised to visit the WAEC Notice of Examination Malpractice Portal (https://waecinternational.org/complaints) to make representations before a final decision is made.
Candidates can check their results via www.waecdirect.org before accessing digital copies of their certificates on www.waec.org.
Those requiring hard copies must apply through the WAEC Certificate Request Portal at https://certrequest.waec.ng/.
WAEC extended its appreciation to government agencies, security operatives, and education stakeholders for ensuring the smooth conduct of the examination.
Candidates are advised to verify their results and take necessary steps for their academic progression.
