The West African Examinations Council has apologised for the delayed conduct of the English Language Paper 2 in the ongoing 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
Candidates sat for the English paper late on Wednesday evening, drawing criticism from parents and stakeholders in the education sector.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, Moyosola Adesina, attributed the delay to efforts aimed at preventing examination malpractice.
“While maintaining the integrity and security of our examination, we faced considerable challenges primarily due to our major aim of preventing leakage of any paper,” the statement read.
It added, “We recognise the importance of the timely conduct of examinations and the impact of this delay on candidates, their schools, and parents. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.
“In spite of our best efforts, we encountered logistical hurdles, security concerns, and socio-cultural factors that negatively influenced our operations.”
Adesina reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to upholding the highest standards in the administration of its examinations and pledged to continue promoting academic excellence across the sub-region.
