Inter Milan advanced to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals following a 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich at San Siro, winning 4-3 on aggregate, yesterday.
The Italian giant built upon their 2-1 first-leg victory in Munich to eliminate the German giants from the competition, marking their second appearance in the final four within three seasons.
Bayern, missing key players including Jamal Musiala, Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano, took the lead through Harry Kane who scored with a low, powerful strike from inside the box. The goal temporarily levelled the tie on aggregate, but Inter responded rapidly with Lautaro Martinez capitalising on a poorly defended corner to restore their advantage.
The home side extended their aggregate lead when former Bayern defender Benjamin Pavard headed in from close range, providing a two-goal cushion. Eric Dier brought Bayern back into contention with a looping header from a short corner routine with approximately 15 minutes remaining, reducing the deficit to a single goal.
Despite sustained pressure during the six minutes of additional time, Bayern Munich could not find the equaliser needed to force extra time. Yann Sommer, facing his former club, made crucial saves from Joshua Kimmich and Leroy Sane, while Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig denied Marcus Thuram multiple times during the opening exchanges.
Thomas Muller featured in what would be his final UCL appearance for Bayern, as the German team exited the competition at the quarter-final stage. Inter now move forward to the semi-finals where they will continue their quest for European glory, having previously reached this stage in 2023.
