Fresh diplomatic manoeuvres surrounding the Iran conflict have taken a new turn, as Donald Trump cancelled a planned trip by top American envoys to Pakistan, signalling a strategic shift in Washington’s approach while maintaining optimism that dialogue with Tehran remains achievable.
The aborted trip would have seen senior envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff travel to Islamabad for talks aimed at easing tensions between the United States and Iran. The initiative had earlier been confirmed by the White House as part of renewed diplomatic efforts, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt expressing confidence that engagement “could open pathways for de-escalation and constructive dialogue.”
However, in a swift reversal, Trump announced that the visit would no longer proceed, citing evolving circumstances surrounding the talks.
“We felt it wasn’t necessary at this time. We are ready when the conditions are right”, Trump said, while reaffirming Washington’s openness to negotiations.
The development comes at a critical juncture in the Middle East peace process, where diplomatic efforts have increasingly relied on intermediaries. Pakistan had emerged as a key facilitator, hosting high-level contacts and providing a neutral platform for engagement between Washington and Tehran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had recently visited Islamabad, engaging with Pakistani officials in consultations described by sources as efforts to “reduce tensions and identify common ground.”
Despite the cancellation of the in-person meeting, U.S. officials insist that diplomatic engagement remains active. A senior administration official noted that Washington is “exploring alternative channels, including indirect and remote engagements, to sustain momentum”, reflecting a flexible approach in response to Iran’s cautious posture on direct talks.
Trump reiterated that the United States is not closing the door on engagement. “Dialogue remains open”, he said, stressing that Iran has the opportunity to return to the table under favourable conditions. The emphasis, officials say, is on ensuring that any future engagement yields substantive outcomes.
